Track laying has officially started on the Foynes to Limerick rail freight line, a key phase in the effort to reopen this important route, led by Iarnród Éireann.

The project, which began in early 2023, is being carried out by the main contractor Sisk and specialist subcontractor Steconfer. The old timber sleepers and jointed tracks have been replaced with new concrete sleepers and rails, forming continuous welded rail. The track laying is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

Further developments include the installation of the Robertstown Viaduct scheduled for summer 2024 and the completion of refurbishment works on the River Deel bridge.

The second phase of the project will involve the implementation of a signaling system, CCTV level crossings, train communication systems, and track upgrades at Limerick and Foynes Port. Iarnród Éireann expects this to take 18 months, contingent on funding, with an anticipated operational start for freight services in early 2026.

The 42km railway line, which first opened in 1858, ceased passenger services in 1963 but continued to handle freight until 2001. The reopening project aligns with Iarnród Éireann’s Rail Freight 2040 Strategy and supports various EU, national, and local development goals, including promoting intermodal transport and environmental protection.

Funding for the project is provided by the Department of Transport and the National Transport Authority. The revived line is expected to bolster sustainable freight transport and support economic activities in the mid-west region.
