LTG Infra has started consulting the market regarding the planned procurement of works to construct the superstructure of the railway line from Kaunas to the Latvian border.

The procurement is expected to be announced in the first quarter of this year. The contractor will be required to ensure the supply of materials and, where necessary, to set up storage and assembly bases, to carry out the work of laying ballast, rails, sleepers, switches, crossings and track stabilisation, and to carry out finishing work.

"Nearly 170 km of railway line will be built in the direction of Latvia, with passenger trains travelling at speeds of up to 249 km/h. This procurement is therefore characterised by its scope and technological requirements for future railway construction," explains Dovydas Palaima, General Manager of LTG Infra Rail Baltica Management.

At present, the construction of the main railway line in the most developed section from Kaunas to the Latvian border is already underway. Here, the railway embankment (formation) and engineering structures are being built on a stretch of almost 30 kilometres, and the construction of the longest railway bridge in the Baltic States over the Neris River is being intensified. In 2024, when new contracts are signed, construction on this section will be even more intensive.

Rail Baltica is the largest railway infrastructure project in the history of the Baltic States and will lead to the development of an electrified European standard bi-directional railway linking Warsaw, Kaunas, Vilnius, Panevėžys, Riga, Parnu and Tallinn. The total length of Rail Baltica in the Baltic States is 870 km: 392 km in Lithuania, 265 km in Latvia and 213 km in Estonia.
