Transfesa, a subsidiary of DB Cargo, has strengthened its position in international rail freight by taking over standard-gauge services previously operated by Renfe Mercancías, El Mercantil reports. These services connect Spain to destinations in Germany and beyond through the Pertús cross-border tunnel, cementing Transfesa's role in facilitating seamless freight transport within the European network.
New operations to Ludwigshafen
One of the key services now operated by Transfesa is the container train from Barcelona to Ludwigshafen, which had been managed by Renfe Mercancías. The service involves transporting goods from the Morrot terminal in Barcelona to Perpignan, with DB Cargo handling traction beyond Perpignan to Ludwigshafen. Transfesa's integration into DB Cargo's European operations showcases its capacity to manage cross-border logistics efficiently.
The Ludwigshafen service is one of two standard-gauge routes currently managed by Transfesa. The other service involves car transport from the Mercedes-Benz plant in Mannheim to Barcelona. Both routes benefit from the deployment of Euro6000 locomotives, which are optimized for standard-gauge operations within the Mediterranean Corridor.
Growing presence in the spanish market
In addition to its standard gauge operations, Transfesa has expanded its domestic freight services. The company now operates a cereal train between Babilafuente and Santander, a route that had previously been managed by Renfe Mercancías. Using Iberian gauge Euro4000 locomotives, Transfesa provides a comprehensive logistics solution, including rolling stock and hopper wagons.
Shifting market dynamics
The transition of these services to Transfesa reflects ongoing changes in the Spanish rail freight sector, where competition among operators has increased. Renfe Mercancías has experienced a reduction in its standard gauge operations, with other routes, such as container services for Kombiverkehr and Hupac, also shifting to other operators.
