In response to the growing demand for sustainable logistics solutions across Europe, LTG Cargo, the freight division of the Lithuanian Railways Group, is expanding its intermodal transport services. This strategic move is in line with the European Union's transport policy, which focuses on reducing the environmental impact of road transport by promoting more efficient and environmentally friendly alternatives.
Eglė Šimė, CEO of LTG Cargo, underlined the company's commitment to become the central intermodal link between the Baltic region and Western Europe. LTG Cargo's expansion includes the development of connections to key destinations such as Duisburg in Germany and Slavkov in Poland. In Poland, LTG Cargo Polska has already shown significant growth with a fleet of 31 locomotives.
Projections by the European Commission indicate a significant increase in road freight transport by 2030 and 2050, which is a major contributor to carbon emissions in the EU. Intermodal transport, which combines different modes such as rail, road, and sea, is being promoted as a sustainable alternative. The Commission has focused its efforts on improving the competitiveness of intermodal transport to minimize dependence on conventional road transport.
It is also expanding its portfolio of intermodal services. Viktorija Terekė, Sustainability Manager at Girteka, highlighted the company's integrated approach to combining different modes of transport. Girteka aims to use rail and ferries for 20% of its long-distance transport by 2025, with shorter distances covered by electric trucks and longer distances by intermodal transport.
