The choice of rail transport aligns with Europe's geographical and infrastructural advantages, offering a quicker and more efficient means of moving goods. The process typically begins at Amazon fulfilment centres, where goods are loaded onto trailers and transported to rail terminals. This integration of rail transport expedites deliveries and significantly reduces carbon emissions, aligning with Amazon's environmental goals.

The company's strategy of blending rail with other transportation modes optimises route planning, ensuring that rail covers longer distances, further minimising carbon footprint. In 2023, this approach is expected to shift thousands of truckloads to rail, contributing to substantial CO₂ emission savings.

To make this happen, Amazon partners with CargoBeamer to help get its semitrailers into pocket wagons while using intermodal routes and terminals of VIIA and services of the Mercitalia Group.
