The Port of Barcelona has started a direct freight rail service with the French cities of Toulouse and Lyon using a maximum permittable European train length of 750 metres.

The collaboration involves APM Terminals Railways Spain, Synergy (the intermodal operator of Hutchison Ports BEST), Maersk and Naviland Cargo. It operates from the BEST terminal four times a week, with three trips to Toulouse and one to Lyon.

This direct route to the French border is feasible thanks to the Port of Barcelona's European gauge UIC track. The service uses Captrain's Stadler Euro6000 locomotives, certified to operate in Spain and France.

The new route aims to enhance the Port of Barcelona's role in European logistics by offering shorter transit times than other ports located further from the Suez Canal. The main focus will be on imports from Asia and exports to the Middle East and America.
