During the Rail Days 2023 event, Calea Ferată din Moldova (CFM), the Moldovan state rail operator, announced planned investment in new rolling stock.

The event in Bucharest included the CFM presentation, which highlighted several issues. One of them was acquiring new rolling stock needed to cover the growing demand for freight rail transportation in Moldova.

In the locomotives area, CFM intends to buy 25-30 shunting locomotives with a price per unit of approximately EUR 2.5 million. In freight wagons, over 4,000 wagons are to be acquired, with a price per unit between eighty and 100,000 EUR. The estimated time for completion of both types of rolling stock is 2024-2026.

CFM currently has 21 mainline locomotives (7 x 3ТE10М, 2 x 2ТE10M-2 and 12 x ТE33АС locomotives), estimating future need to be higher by ten locomotives. The current 27 ČME3 shunting locomotives should be supported by 12 more shunters. Purchasing shunters mentioned above could cover both shunting and mainline needs, with one locomotive type usable for both purposes.
