The agreement covers 12 locomotives and 75 passenger coaches, including sleeping cars, operated by Swedish passenger rail company SJ. The contract has a value described as tens of millions of euros.
The contract was awarded following a procurement by the Swedish Transport Administration. The fleet operates mainly on the Stockholm–Umeå and Stockholm–Narvik routes.
Maintenance will primarily be carried out in Luleå, with around 60 Alstom employees based across Luleå, Umeå and Kiruna involved in servicing railway vehicles in northern Sweden.
The work includes preventive and corrective maintenance, component replacement, refurbishment and measures to extend the life of the fleet. Alstom said the age of some vehicles and the technical complexity of sleeper coaches and onboard systems require specialist maintenance capabilities.
“Reliable night train services depend on more than maintenance — they require strong local presence, long-term asset expertise and continuous investment,” said Mikael Granberg, Services Director at Alstom Sweden and Finland.
Alstom is also investing in its northern Swedish depots to expand regional maintenance capacity. The company already services vehicles ranging from rolling stock built in the 1980s to newer multiple units and locomotives.
