Alstom has acquired Cummins’ hydrogen fuel cell activities dedicated to rail, integrating engineering, product, and support capabilities used in its hydrogen train fleets.
The acquisition brings fuel cell development and support functions in-house, allowing Alstom to manage performance, durability, and energy management requirements across its installed fleet. It also supports the completion of ongoing contracted hydrogen train programmes, including the Coradia iLint and Coradia Stream H projects.
Hydrogen traction remains a key alternative for non-electrified, long-distance routes where full electrification is not economically viable. By internalising these capabilities, Alstom aims to improve reliability growth and maintenance support while aligning more closely with customer operational requirements.
Alstom has been a pioneer in hydrogen rail technology, with multiple fleets in commercial service across Europe. The integration of Cummins’ rail-focused fuel cell expertise consolidates the company’s position in the zero-emission traction segment and ensures continuity in the development and support of its hydrogen train portfolio.
