Under the transaction, the locomotives will continue to be leased to SBB Cargo International under a full-service agreement covering maintenance and technical support, ensuring uninterrupted cross-border freight operations.

Nordic Re-Finance has agreed to acquire 31 Re 482 (Bombardier Traxx AC1) electric locomotives from SBB Cargo Switzerland. The Swedish leasing company will take over the entire fleet in February 2026 and assume the existing lease agreement with SBB Cargo International.

The locomotives, built in 2004–2005 for operations on the European north–south corridor, have been leased to SBB Cargo International since 2010. They operate primarily on services between Germany and Switzerland.

The sale forms part of SBB Cargo Switzerland’s long-term fleet renewal programme. By 2040, the company plans to fully renew its locomotive and freight wagon fleet, reducing the number of vehicle types and standardising around a single mainline locomotive platform supplied by Stadler Rail Valencia SAU by 2035.

SBB Cargo Switzerland currently owns around 200 mainline locomotives across six different types. According to the company, standardisation and simplified maintenance are expected to reduce fleet operating costs by approximately 60%. Locomotives reaching the end of their service life will be sold or scrapped after reusable components are recovered.

For Nordic Re-Finance, the acquisition represents its second fleet purchase since forming a partnership with infrastructure investor Infranity in March 2025, following the acquisition of 15 electric locomotives from DBC Scandinavia in December 2025. The company manages a fleet of around 200 locomotives across the Nordic countries, Switzerland, Poland and Hungary.
