ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) has signed a ten-year agreement with the Sona terminal near Verona, securing long-term access to intermodal capacity at the site.
The Sona terminal is equipped with two access tracks and four 600-meter loading tracks, supporting intermodal operations including container transfer between rail and road. The facility covers around 110,000 square meters and is expected to expand capacity by 2028. The site currently enables up to 30 train movements per week and employs about 30 staff.
RCG intends to strengthen its rail freight operations through the terminal, aiming to support shifts from road to rail transport across Europe. Sona is already linked to RCG’s TransFER network with direct services to Vienna (twice weekly), Hanover (four times weekly), and Wuppertal (eight times weekly). Additional connections are expected to follow next year.
The collaboration with the Sona terminal forms part of RCG’s strategy to consolidate its position in the Italian freight market and develop the site into a regional distribution hub for transport flows between Southern, Northern, and Eastern Europe.
