Bentheimer Eisenbahn has launched several projects this spring, including the first freight movement on new infrastructure to Garrel, the signing of a long-term rolling stock maintenance contract with TRI Train Rental, and the commissioning of construction work on the Regiopa railway line between Neuenhaus and Coevorden.
First maize train to Garrel
The first full train loaded with maize has been delivered to GS Agri / Futterallianz in Garrel using the upgraded Friesoyther Railway infrastructure. Approximately 2,000 tonnes of cargo were transported to a new siding that includes a conversion facility. The siding was built for €20 million and is equipped for grain and fodder logistics.
This is the first major rail delivery to the site, which has been prepared to support bulk agricultural goods movements by rail. Bentheimer Eisenbahn coordinated the transport and operation with the receiver. The siding is now integrated into regional freight flows, with further transports expected.
Maintenance cooperation with TRI Train Rental
Bentheimer Eisenbahn and TRI Train Rental have signed a long-term maintenance agreement. The contract formalises cooperation that began at the end of 2023, when Bentheimer Eisenbahn took over parts of the ECM 4 maintenance responsibilities for TRI’s passenger rolling stock.
TRI provides locomotive-hauled emergency and replacement services, particularly in North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg. Under the agreement, Bentheimer Eisenbahn is responsible for the maintenance of various coach types, including vehicles used in long-distance charter and emergency services.
The contract covers not only maintenance according to regulatory deadlines but also includes repainting and technical servicing of special vehicles such as bistro cars designed for international operation. The workshop capabilities in Bentheim are being used to manage this contract in parallel with existing services for local transport operators.
Regiopa line upgrade: Construction begins in May
The Regiopa cross-border rail line between Neuenhaus and Coevorden is entering its next phase. Bentheimer Eisenbahn has awarded Stefen a contract for the expansion works. Construction is scheduled to begin in May in Hoogstede.
The project includes upgrading the line for 100 km/h operation, the construction of new platforms in Hoogstede, Veldhausen, Laarwald, and Emlichheim, and technical upgrades to 25 level crossings. Thirteen new switches will also be installed, along with 1,500 metres of noise barriers. Environmental measures include specific provisions such as habitat structures for reptiles.
The construction contract is valued at €23.5 million. According to the companies involved, this is the largest single project awarded in the history of Stefen. The line upgrade is part of the broader reactivation effort aimed at improving regional and cross-border passenger transport options.
