ÖBB Rail Cargo Group and STRABAG SE are providing housing for people affected by the earthquakes in February in the province of Adıyaman in south-eastern Turkey.

One month on, the situation in the region remains extremely critical. In addition to the earthquakes, Adıyaman has been hit by heavy rains and flooding in recent days. Millions of people are in urgent need of shelter, food, medicine and hygiene items. One of the biggest challenges is getting supplies to where they are needed.

"After the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, it was immediately clear that we had to help. Just a few days after the terrible events, we were able to send 2,000 winter jackets to the disaster area and shortly afterwards set up a special fund for employees who had relatives affected by the earthquake. The fund will temporarily cover expenses such as rent and accommodation for the families," explains Klemens Haselsteiner, CEO of STRABAG. "But it was also important for us to organise direct relief measures as quickly as possible. Together with the Rail Cargo Group, we came up with the idea of delivering and setting up a container village in the region," he adds.

The 220-tonne train is on its way to Turkey, travelling 2,800 kilometres from Bratislava to Gölbaşı in Adıyaman province. The Rail Cargo Group's route passes through Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and ends at the Turkish border. From there, the Turkish State Railways will provide further transport to the final destination, where the containers will be handed over to local aid organisations.

"The infrastructure in the earthquake region was severely damaged. It was therefore important for us to help by doing what we do best - providing transport and logistics services via our TransNET to Turkey," says Imre Kovács, Board Member of Rail Cargo Group.

A special train from Rail Cargo Group will deliver the 30 STRABAG construction site cabins and three sanitary containers. According to the Turkish authorities, this is the largest container shipment from abroad for the Adıyaman region. Other supplies, such as furniture and much-needed toiletries, are also on board the train. The containers will be used in the Gölbaşı municipality to provide housing for people made homeless by the devastating earthquakes.

The container homes are expected to be ready for occupancy approximately two weeks after the containers arrive and will be occupied for at least one year until new housing is available in the region.
