Genesee & Wyoming (G&W) has announced the introduction of Grupo México Transportes (GMXT) as a potential new participant in its CG Railway (CGR) joint venture, subject to the approval of regulatory authorities.
The joint venture, established in 2017 by G&W and SEACOR Holdings, operates the CG Railway. This service, functioning since 2001, offers rail-ferry transportation between Mobile, Alabama, and Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, traversing the Gulf of Mexico. GMXT's proposed acquisition of SEACOR’s shares in CGR marks its entry as a new partner with G&W in this venture.
Michael Miller, G&W North America's CEO, noted that this partnership leverages GMXT's presence in rail transportation services in Mexico and its network in the southern United States, including 13 ports across both countries. He emphasised that GMXT's network access and expertise, combined with G&W’s rail service capabilities, aim to improve CGR’s service offerings and extend its rail service reach into Mexico.
CGR offers several service features, including a three-day port-to-port transit time, an expedited customs clearance process, and reduced exposure to pilferage during transit in the Gulf of Mexico.
G&W, a company with ownership or leasing agreements over more than 100 freight railroads, employs approximately 7,300 people. It serves 3,000 customers in North America and the UK/Europe (Freightliner UK, Germany and Poland). G&W also engages in rail service at over 30 major ports, rail-ferry service between the U.S. Southeast and Mexico, transloading services, and industrial railcar switching and repair services. G&W is owned by Brookfield Infrastructure Partners and GIC.
