The history of rail transport in the Netherlands began on September 20, 1839, when the first train made the 16 km trip from Amsterdam to Haarlem. During 1938-1992, the Nederlandse Spoorwegen was granted a monopoly on rail transport. From 1992 to the present, the Nederlandse Spoorwegen lost its monopoly. Total rail length is 3 607 km and the track gauge is 1435 mm.
