Introduction to railway industry in Bulgaria
The Ruse – Varna, the first Bulgarian railway line, was started in 1864 and opened in 1866. In 1885, the Railway Act was passed making railways in Bulgaria state property. On 1 January 2002, the new Railway Transport Act entered into force splitting Bulgarian State Railways into two separate entities – a railway carrier and an infrastructure enterprise. Total rail length is 4 070 km with the track gauge of 1 435mm.
