Vale has signed an agreement with Wabtec to implement Positive Train Control on the Carajás Railway (EFC) and Vitória a Minas Railway (EFVM) in Brazil.
The system will use Wabtec’s I-ETMS, or Interoperable Electronic Train Management System. The scope includes integration with onboard systems and existing railway infrastructure on both Vale-operated lines.
PTC provides real-time operational management, train monitoring and automatic intervention under risk conditions. Vale said the system is intended to reduce critical operational events and increase predictability in railway operations.
EFC and EFVM are both operated by Vale and are used within the company’s integrated logistics network for mining operations. According to Vale, the two lines are also Brazil’s only regularly operating passenger railways.
Vale is headquartered in Brazil and operates mining and logistics assets including railways, maritime terminals and ports. Wabtec supplies equipment, systems, digital solutions and services for freight and transit rail, as well as mining, marine and industrial markets.
