Work on the fleet commenced in December 2024, with the final unit delivered to Heavy Haul Rail in February 2026.

Porterbrook and Heavy Haul Rail have placed a fleet of 76 repurposed wagons into full operational service following a 14-month conversion programme. The project, executed at the WH Davis facility in Mansfield, transformed surplus HHA hopper wagons into MWA-C box wagons designed for construction materials and bulk aggregates.

The conversion process utilized a sustainable engineering approach by retaining the original bogies, braking systems, and underframe components while installing a newly designed, lightweight steel body. This design is engineered to maximize payload capacity and is projected to extend the service life of the assets by approximately 30 years.

By repurposing existing rolling stock rather than commissioning new builds, the partnership reduced the carbon footprint associated with fleet expansion.

Heavy Haul Rail intends to deploy the MWA-C units on "jumbo" heavy-haul services across the UK network. According to the operator, a single loaded train in this configuration replaces approximately 140 truck movements, offering significant fuel and emissions savings for bulk logistics clients.

For WH Davis, the contract reinforces the role of domestic UK manufacturing in rolling stock maintenance and specialized conversions. The MWA-C design emphasizes durability and structural robustness, targeting the high-intensity duty cycles required for the UK’s growing infrastructure and construction sectors.
