The manufacturer claims the new design offers a 30% reduction in purchase price compared to existing approved 40ft twin wagon models currently serving the British intermodal sector.

Greenbrier-Europe has launched a testing programme for a new 40ft twin container wagon designed specifically for the UK’s restricted loading gauge and infrastructure requirements.

The wagon is engineered for a 20.5t axle load and features an optimized payload capacity of up to $2 \times 63.5t$. For specialized heavy cargo, the units are capable of transporting containers weighing up to 40t.

Technical Specifications and Maintenance

A primary focus of the new design is the reduction of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) through extended maintenance intervals and component longevity:

  • Wheelsets: Equipped with a newly developed wheel profile offering 40mm of wear allowance, intended to increase mileage between replacements.
  • Bogie Performance: Utilizes the Y-family bogie equipped with hydraulic dampers to meet GMRT2141 ride quality standards.
  • Braking System: Features a dual brake concept with a twin-pipe system. The underframe is compatible with both wagon-mounted and compact brake systems, allowing operators to select braking hardware based on fleet preference.

Infrastructure Versatility

Beyond standard intermodal operations, Greenbrier is marketing the wagon as a modular platform. By utilizing specialized attachments, the units can be repurposed for track construction and infrastructure maintenance, including the transport of rails, pipes, and bulk materials.

The wagon has entered a comprehensive validation phase, which includes ride-stability testing to ensure unrestricted operation across the UK network. Early test data indicates a measurable increase in ride stability compared to current generation rolling stock.
