Hitachi Rail will leverage Google Cloud’s cybersecurity, generative AI and emerging agentic AI technologies as part of a new collaboration aimed at accelerating digital transformation across rail operations. The partnership supports Hitachi Rail’s long-term strategy to integrate digital innovation with sustainability and promote modal shift towards rail.
The initiative builds on the wider strategic alliance between Hitachi and Google Cloud announced in October 2025. It combines Hitachi Rail’s operational expertise—including global deployment of its HMAX platform—with digital engineering capabilities from GlobalLogic and Google Cloud’s AI tools.
AI and cloud technologies for rail operations
Under the collaboration, Hitachi Rail will deploy Google Cloud solutions such as the Vertex AI platform to support applications in predictive analytics, operational decision-making and energy-efficient mobility management. The company aims to apply “physical AI” to critical rail systems, enhancing asset monitoring and preparing the foundation for future autonomous operations.
Hitachi Rail Group CEO Giuseppe Marino said the partnership will support the company’s ambition to lead the digital transformation of the rail sector, stating: “Sustainability is the destination—digital is how we'll get there.” According to Marino, the combination of operational technology and advanced AI should enable more efficient and reliable services for operators and passengers.
Google Cloud highlighted that the cooperation brings together deep railway domain expertise with advanced AI capabilities, creating the basis for increased automation and long-term development of autonomous networks.
Part of broader Hitachi digital strategy
The initiative extends Hitachi Group’s broader investment in AI infrastructure, including its Lumada 3.0 solutions, and reflects ongoing efforts to merge digital and energy transitions within the transport sector.
