The initiative, introduced at Sentul Station, involves private sector participation in the provision of rolling stock for rail freight operations.

Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) has launched a new leasing model for locomotives and wagons under a "Pay-As-Use" system.

Under this model, KTMB aims to increase the utilization of railway infrastructure, which currently operates below capacity. The involvement of local companies, including SMH Rail, is expected to contribute to the supply of assets while reducing dependency on public funding.

Rail freight has been positioned as an alternative to road transport, with proponents citing its potential to reduce congestion and accident risks. A single 40-wagon freight train is estimated to replace approximately 80 trucks on the road.

The initiative is being introduced as part of broader efforts to integrate private sector investment into the national rail network, with a focus on increasing efficiency and operational capacity within the freight sector.
