This critical upgrade will modernize the historic line, which has been in service since 1981.

SYSTRA France teams have participated in the technological migration of the signalling stations and operations on Europe's busiest high-speed line, the Paris-Lyon LGV. This will allow the line to migrate to the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) in the future.

Brought into service in 1981, the Paris-Lyon line is the oldest LGV in Europe and the busiest, with up to 13 trains per hour. Equipped with an old signalling system, computerized signal boxes completely regenerated its two tracks. The aim is to enable migration to the interoperable ERTMS level 2 system by 2026.

Since 13 November, the signalling on the LGV Sud-Est line has been controlled from a new control tower in Lyon. The 409 km Paris-Lyon line will now be more reliable, resilient and interoperable. Trains from all over Europe will be able to use it. With up to 16 trains per hour in each direction, the number of connections on this line will increase even further by 2030.

„This switchover is a world first and represents the culmination of almost five years of studies. SYSTRA France has been involved in all phases of the project since 2019. This is the first time that SNCF Réseau has outsourced so many tasks," said Marc Bogaert, project manager, FIT (Railways), SYSTRA France.
