Equipped with ETCS and various technical upgrades, these locomotives will contribute to the fleet renewal strategy and ensure reliable and cost-effective maintenance.

CZ LOKO has recently handed over the first modernized traction vehicle, EffiShunter 1000M, to ČD (Czech Railways). This marks the beginning of a project to fully modernize fourteen 742 series locomotives. Modernization includes equipping the locomotives with the European Train Control System (ETCS), ensuring enhanced safety and performance.

The 742 series locomotives, popularly known as "Tomcats" or "Bracelets", were originally produced between 1977 and 1986. The modernization project will transform them into virtually new vehicles. During the modernization process, the locomotives' original chassis and main frame will be retained and the necessary modifications will be carried out. The locomotives will be fitted with new cabs, drive trains, pneumatic and electrical equipment, and auxiliary electric drives. The modernized locomotives will have lower bonnets, which will significantly improve the driver's visibility.

Moreover, as part of the modernization, the mobile part of the ETCS is being installed. This enhancement positions the 742 series and the 750.7 series to provide efficient service on ETCS-equipped lines. They will fulfill various roles, including rolling stock provision during voltage closures, transport of accident equipment (accident train), and meeting operational layout and transport requirements in independent traction.

"The comprehensive upgrade of the 742 series locomotives to the EffiShunter 1000M is also part of our Strategy 2030, which will see the renewal of a significant part of the fleet. These locomotives are designed to operate on independent traction on ETCS-equipped corridors. Under its exclusive supervision, operation on the selected railway network will be ensured from January 2025," said Jiří Ješeta, Member of the Board of Directors and Deputy Director General of ČD for Passenger Transport.

Originally scheduled to be completed by 2024, CZ LOKO has accelerated the entire modernization series. The company expects to complete the entire order of fourteen locomotives by the end of this year. The first modernized locomotive has already been handed over to ČD, with further deliveries scheduled for the coming days. If all goes according to plan, the last modernized locomotive of the 742 series will be delivered in December 2023.
