The deployment of multi-country approved electric traction is expected to streamline cross-border freight flows without locomotive changes at borders.

ELL Polska Asset has taken delivery of its first Siemens Vectron MS locomotive in early November. The new unit, acquired with support from Poland’s National Reconstruction Plan, will be used by Bahnoperator and is the first Vectron delivered to a Polish customer that includes approval for operations in Italy.

The locomotive, named “Marco Polo,” is part of an order for two multi-system electric locomotives, co-financed by the Centre for EU Transport Projects under a programme aimed at improving the competitiveness of intermodal rail freight. The new Vectrons will be deployed primarily on Asia–Europe freight corridors, linking intermodal terminals in Italy and across Central and Eastern Europe.

The locomotives are equipped for use in 11 European countries: Poland, Germany, Austria, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia, and Croatia. Technical specifications include 6.4 MW output under AC and 6.0 MW under DC power, along with ETCS Baseline 3.

The user of the locomotive, Bahnoperator, will integrate it into its international intermodal operations.

This is the first Vectron MS locomotive delivered to ELL Polska Asset, which leases rolling stock in the Polish market and cooperates with Siemens Mobility. With over 170 Siemens electric locomotives already in use by Polish operators, the fleet continues to expand across the region.
