Leo Express has announced an investment of EUR 16 million to modify its Stadler FLIRT units for dual traction compatibility. The project will allow the company’s trains to operate under both direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) systems. The modification is supported by funding from the Czech Ministry of Transport, which will cover approximately 40% of the total costs through a grant from the Operational Programme Transport 2021–2027.
The modifications will be carried out by Stadler, the manufacturer of the FLIRT units currently operated by Leo Express. This selection was made through a tender process. The planned upgrades aim to ensure the continued operation of Leo Express trains on the Prague–Ostrava route after the anticipated transition to an AC-powered system.
Stadler will collaborate with several Czech subcontractors to complete the project. Among them are AŽD Praha and VUZ Velim, which will contribute to the realization of the contract.
