Scheduled for delivery in 2025, these locomotives will contribute significantly to PT KAI's operational capabilities and green initiatives.

In a significant development for Indonesia's rail sector, Progress Rail, a Caterpillar company, has signed a contract with PT Kereta Indonesia (PT KAI) to provide 54 EMD® GT38AC freight locomotives. The move is aimed at expanding the capabilities of the state railway in South Sumatra and reflects a strategic effort to improve the region's transport infrastructure. Delivery of the new locomotives is scheduled to begin in 2025.

Designed to meet the challenges of the unique environments of Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, the GT38AC locomotives are equipped with the eight-cylinder EMD 710 engine and AC traction, offering reliability and performance. Notably, these locomotives are capable of running on biodiesel blends up to B35, supporting Indonesia's move towards alternative fuels. The design focuses on improving operator visibility to ensure safety and efficiency.

The partnership marks a continued collaboration between KAI and Progress Rail, building on a history that has seen 91 GT38AC locomotives delivered to PT KAI since 2011. KAI President Director Didiek Hartantyo highlighted the initiative as a testament to the company's commitment to advancing railway technology in Indonesia: “With the addition of a fleet that has the latest technology, it is expected that KAI can increase its contribution to the need for reliable and environmentally friendly transportation of goods.”

The GT38AC locomotives are renowned for their high tractive effort, which offers operational savings and reduces greenhouse gas emissions, in line with PT KAI's objectives for sustainable and efficient freight transport in Sumatra. “We are committed to continuing our support of PT KAI with broad solutions to help them achieve their operational and emissions reduction targets and contribute to the country’s economic growth,” said Jack Zhang, Executive Vice President of Locomotive at Progress Rail.
