In an important step to improve operational safety and reliability, Renfe, Spain's national railway operator, has announced an investment of 166.8 million euros for comprehensive maintenance of its passenger and freight trains throughout 2024. The investment is earmarked for what the company describes as "major repairs", a preventive maintenance strategy designed to keep rolling stock in optimum condition.
The initiative covers a wide range of maintenance activities, underlining Renfe's commitment to ensuring the highest standards of safety and reliability in its operations. These activities are part of a regular, scheduled program that includes a thorough examination of all components and critical parts of the rolling stock, following a strict protocol outlined in Renfe's maintenance plans.
Renfe Ingeniería y Mantenimiento, the division responsible for the maintenance and transformation of rolling stock, will oversee the execution of these major preventive maintenance operations. The process includes the disassembly, repair, and reassembly of all vehicle components, with particular emphasis on those critical to safety and reliability. It also includes the replacement of worn elements to maintain passenger comfort and the maintenance of components nearing the end of their useful life. On completion of the maintenance work, both static and dynamic functional tests are carried out to ensure that the vehicles function properly and to identify and rectify potential problems in advance.
