Californian authorities have finalised a deal to buy 4 hydrogen FLIRT trains from Stadler with an option for 25 more trainsets.

California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) and Caltrans have signed a fixed contract with Stadler for four hydrogen-powered trains. Furthermore, there's an option to procure up to 25 additional trainsets if required.

The foundation for the collaboration between Stadler and the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA), was laid during InnoTrans 2022.

After testing in Switzerland and the USA, Stadler's hydrogen train validated its performance and reliability. As a result, CalSTA and Caltrans have decided to further their association with Stadler by advancing to the next phase: the introduction of an evolved SBCTA model with increased transport capacity.

Unlike Europe, where battery FLIRT trainsets gain popularity, the FLIRT H2 seems to be more successful in the US with limited electrification. California is leading the way for decarbonising US railways, by introducing new emission regulations for locomotives, electrification of new lines, or plans for high-speed railways.
