German manufacturer of braking systems, Knorr-Bremse, has secured a major supply agreement with South Korean train manufacturer, Dawonsys.

Knorr-Bremse is not a newcomer in the South Korean market. The new agreement confirms an option to order placed already in 2020. In the option, Knorr-Bremse will equip 208 railcars with electro-pneumatic braking systems for regional and commuter trains.

South Korea’s national rail operator, KORAIL, is expected to put the first trains into service by the end of March 2024. Knorr-Bremse's technologies will include brake control systems and wheel slide protection technologies for suburban South Korean trains.

Jürgen Wilder, a Member of the Executive Board of Knorr-Bremse AG and responsible for the Rail Vehicle Systems division, stated that the company expects to benefit from the dynamic evolution of South Korea’s rail sector while bolstering its position as a key supplier of train systems in the region.

After equipping the 208 railcars from the order option, a total of 358 railcars will be equipped with Knorr-Bremse’s braking system in South Korea’s regional and commuter train segment.
