This service will allow passengers to travel from Milan to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, directly in seven hours using the Frecciarossa trains.
The direct connection will provide easy access for Slovenian citizens to Italian destinations like Venice and Trieste, with travel times of approximately two and a half hours. Similarly, Italian passengers will be able to visit Ljubljana and other well-known Slovenian destinations such as the Postojna and San Škocjan caves in the municipality of Divaccia and the town of Lipizza in the municipality of Sesana.
The collaboration between Trenitalia and SŽ PP includes conducting tests on the Slovenian infrastructure network, which is currently undergoing upgrades. These upgrades are expected to reduce the travel times for the Frecciarossa connection. The ultimate goal is to establish 2 daily connections between Milan and Ljubljana.
This Italy-Slovenia connection complements Trenitalia's existing international services, such as the Eurocity connections to Swiss cities including Zurich, Basel, Bern, Geneva, Montreux, Lausanne, and Lugano, and the Euronight service connecting various Italian cities with Munich in Germany and Vienna in Austria.
Additionally, Trenitalia has announced a preliminary agreement with Deutsche Bahn, a German railway company, to extend Frecciarossa services between Italy and Germany by the end of 2026. Current efforts are focused on establishing connections between Milan and Munich and between Rome and Munich. Trenitalia and Deutsche Bahn are also exploring potential future service expansions to other destinations in Germany.
