By the end of 2026, you will be able to reach Rome and Milan from Munich and Monaco by Frecciarossa 1000 trains, Trenitalia and DB say.

Trenitalia, an FS Italiane Group company, has signed a preliminary agreement with Deutsche Bahn, a German railway company, to launch the Frecciarossa train service between Italy and Germany. The service is scheduled to start by the end of 2026 and will include routes connecting Milan and Munich, as well as Rome and Munich.

This initiative is part of the Italy-Germany pilot project, which was jointly proposed by Trenitalia and Deutsche Bahn. The project was selected by the European Commission as a component of its Action Plan to develop long-distance, cross-border services, fostering extended cooperation.

The introduction of the Frecciarossa service aims to provide a direct, environmentally friendly travel option between Italy and Germany, potentially reducing travel times and enhancing intermodal transport options. In Italy, travellers will have access to various services offered by Trenitalia, including FrecciaLinks, a combined train and bus service.

The agreement also anticipates future expansion possibilities, leveraging Germany's extensive railway network. Both Trenitalia and Deutsche Bahn are exploring potential extensions to other destinations in Germany, such as Berlin. Additionally, the anticipated completion of the Brenner Base Tunnel is expected to reduce travel times by about an hour.
