Renfe has launched a EUR 42.7m tender for the construction of a maintenance base at Móstoles-El Soto to support the renewal of Madrid’s Cercanías C-5 commuter rail network.
The depot forms part of Renfe’s Comprehensive Workshops and Maintenance Plan 2025–2030, which allocates more than EUR 1bn to modernise maintenance facilities across Spain. It will increase parking and servicing capacity and reduce intervention times on one of the country’s most heavily used suburban rail lines.
The site will include three 200-metre internal maintenance tracks, an adjacent building for offices and auxiliary services, and three external tracks with technical platforms. Additional infrastructure will comprise a wash track and a track equipped with a winch.
The project is part of the wider EUR 1.35bn action plan to modernise the Madrid commuter corridor, including infrastructure and rolling stock upgrades. Of this total, EUR 650m is managed by infrastructure manager Adif, while EUR 700m is allocated to Renfe for fleet renewal and operational improvements.
The corridor carries approximately 72 million passenger journeys annually. Service levels were increased from 262 to 317 daily trains in early 2025 during the A-5 motorway tunnel works, resulting in a 30% rise in passenger numbers in the first three months.
