The installation is prepared for axle loads of 32.5 tonnes, a value not used elsewhere on Sweden’s rail network.

Port of Luleå has finished the initial phase of a wider infrastructure programme aimed at accommodating higher traffic volumes and heavier rail operations. The railway connection between the national network and Viktoriahamnen has been rebuilt, with five kilometres of track renewed and expanded.

The terminal area now features three tracks instead of one, allowing longer formations and higher through-flow. According to the port, this layout is intended to support rising transport requirements from industries in northern Sweden.

Port of Luleå sits on the Main Line and the Iron Ore Line and is listed by the European Commission as a core port. The current works form part of a broader expansion programme linked to industrial projects in the region. Agreements with ShoreLink and Stegra cover terminal operations and logistics services for the updated facilities.
