Hitachi Rail has secured contracts from Infraestruturas de Portugal to modernise telecommunications and passenger information systems on the Cascais Line, a key commuter route in Lisbon.
The SIP will provide real-time updates on train operations across all stations on the line, incorporating multimedia formats to support evolving communication technologies. In addition, the telematics renewal includes upgrades to the data network, time information systems, energy monitoring, and SCADA infrastructure. The project commenced in the fourth quarter of 2024.
Hitachi Rail is delivering the project in partnership with SISINT and Conecticabo. This latest contract follows an agreement to upgrade the line’s signalling system with electronic ETCS Level 2 interlocking technology. The company has been active in Portugal’s railway sector since the early 1990s, supplying signalling, telecommunications, and control systems.
The Cascais Line is one of Lisbon’s busiest commuter routes, and the ongoing work is part of broader efforts to modernise the infrastructure. Hitachi Rail has previously supplied telecommunications solutions for other Portuguese railway lines, including Sines, Évora, and Beira Alta.
