Work on the railway connection to the Outer Port of A Coruña has progressed with the completion of excavation for Tunnel 1, a 3.7-kilometer section forming a key part of the future access route.

The project, managed by Adif AV, is expected to enable freight rail operations between Punta Langosteira and the Atlantic Axis by 2027.

The tunnel accounts for 55% of the total 6.7-kilometer railway connection, which will link the Outer Port to the existing rail network. Once operational, the connection is projected to handle over 600,000 tonnes of freight per year. The railway link is intended to support intermodal transport by integrating port and rail operations.

The project involves an investment of 124.8 million euros, funded entirely through the European Union’s Next Generation recovery funds. The financing agreement was signed in 2022 by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Adif AV, Puertos del Estado, and the Port Authority of A Coruña.

Further assessments are being conducted on potential modifications to the connection, including the possibility of expanding capacity through a new terminal in the port’s area of influence. This would provide additional capacity to support freight traffic currently handled by the Coruña-San Diego terminal.
