Projects like this are integral to the Scandinavian-Mediterranean corridor of the TEN-T network, contributing to the development of a modern transport infrastructure in Sicily.

Webuild has completed the track installation on the 38-kilometer Bicocca-Catenanuova section, part of the high-capacity Palermo-Catania railway line in Sicily. This section, commissioned by RFI (Italian Railway Network) under the FS Group, has reached over 86% completion and is scheduled to enter service in spring 2025.

Key infrastructure adjustments on this segment include the elimination of level crossings, aimed at improving road safety and minimizing traffic interference along the railway route. Modifications were also made to the General Regulatory Plans for Catania Bicocca, Motta Sant’Anastasia, Sferro, and Catenanuova stations to accommodate the newly installed double track.

The construction efforts have relied heavily on local labor, with up to 400 workers actively involved in the Bicocca-Catenanuova segment, over 90% of whom are from surrounding communities. Since the project’s inception, around 600 partner companies have participated.

On completion, this doubled track aims to enable increased train frequency, reduce travel times, and support a more sustainable shift from road to rail travel across Sicily. The Bicocca-Catenanuova section is one of eight projects Webuild is undertaking in the region, including seven railway segments on the Palermo-Catania-Messina line and one lot on the Ragusana motorway, which will link Ragusa to Catania.
