The Karwendelbahn railway line between Innsbruck and Scharnitz resumed service on Monday, September 2, 2024, following extensive restoration work.

The line was heavily impacted by mudslides on August 12, which deposited approximately 23,000 tons of debris along the track. Over the past three weeks, a team of around 30 workers from ÖBB and contracted firms has been engaged in intensive efforts to clear the track and repair the damage.

Heavy machinery played a crucial role in the cleanup, including a specialized track cleaning machine that removed mud from about 1,000 meters of track. This machine lifted the track, excavated and cleaned the contaminated ballast, and then repositioned the cleaned material back on the track.

While train services resumed as scheduled, work along the line is not entirely finished. Additional measures include the repair and reinforcement of approximately 350 meters of rockfall protection nets to ensure the continued safety of operations.

With the reopening of the Karwendelbahn, replacement bus services between Innsbruck, Seefeld, and Scharnitz will come to an end, restoring normal rail operations in the region. ÖBB has expressed its gratitude to passengers for their patience during the disruption.
