This development is part of the preparation for the initiation of electric train services scheduled for September 2024.

Caltrain, alongside Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and Balfour Beatty, has announced the completion of a critical phase in the Caltrain Electrification Project. The entire 51-mile corridor owned by Caltrain, running between San Francisco and San Jose, is now fully energized and has undergone successful testing.

The project saw the installation of an overhead catenary system, which will allow for the testing of these trains over the entire length of the corridor at full operational speeds.

To ensure a seamless transition to electric service, Caltrain has constructed two main traction power substations, one located in San Jose and the other in South San Francisco. These, along with one switch station and seven parallel stations, are designed to supply, distribute, and regulate electricity to power the overhead wires and, consequently, the trains.

The collaboration between Caltrain, PG&E, and Balfour Beatty was instrumental in maintaining rail service for daily commuters, exceeding 20,000 individuals, while completing the electrification process. PG&E's role included the construction of transmission connections and the rebuilding and upgrading of substations to support the electrification needs.

As part of ensuring public safety with the newly electrified corridor, Caltrain is conducting an extensive outreach campaign. The initiative includes distributing mailers, holding community meetings, and leveraging social media platforms to educate the public about safety practices. The campaign underscores the importance of treating all overhead wires as live.

The transition from diesel-powered trains to an electrified system aims at not only improving service frequency and passenger experience but also contributing to regional climate action goals. The new Stadler KISS electric trains are expected to offer amenities such as Wi-Fi, power outlets, digital information displays, and increased storage capacities. Furthermore, the project is aligned with efforts to advance equity and sustainability, reducing noise and air pollution, and improving access for communities along the corridor.
