PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe has announced the construction of Poland's longest railway tunnel, enabling a direct route that significantly reduces journey times between Limanowa and Nowy Sącz. Scheduled for completion in 2026, this development is part of the wider Podłęże-Piekiełko project, which has a budget of over PLN 1.9 billion net and is one of the most extensive infrastructure initiatives in southern Poland.
A consortium consisting of Budimex S.A., Gülermak Ağir Sanayi Inşaat ve Taahhüt A.Ş. and Gülermak Sp. z o.o. has been awarded a contract to comprehensively modernize the Limanowa-Klęczany railway siding within 31 months.
The modernization will cover over 12.5 km of track. New stations and stops, designed with full accessibility in mind, will be introduced, adding convenience and inclusiveness to the travel experience. In addition, the project will include the redevelopment of existing lines for regional benefit and the reconstruction of structures to improve safety and capacity for both passenger and freight services.
"This investment is part of a larger project that will not only shorten travel times and make these connections more efficient but will also significantly increase the scope for transport companies, for agglomeration traffic, so that it will finally be possible to get from Krakow to Nowy Sącz and from Nowy Sącz to Krakow in 60 minutes. This is great news for all those who want to travel between the two cities and see their opportunities in rail transport," said Dariusz Klimczak, Minister of Infrastructure.
