The new Union Pacific facility will serve as a critical link for transporting goods sustainably by rail from ocean ports in the Los Angeles area to the rapidly expanding southwest region of the United States.
Scheduled to commence operations in early 2024, the terminal will be situated in Union Pacific's downtown rail yard. It is designed to scale up according to future demand. This initiative also aims to reduce truck traffic on the nation’s highways.
This new service will enable the conversion of long-distance truck transportation to rail, saving 610 truck kilometres on routes from the Los Angeles Basin to Phoenix. This shift is expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 75% compared to road transport.
