A major milestone in the development of the Duisburg Gateway Terminal (DGT) has been reached with the successful installation of the first 32-meter-high and 122-meter-long crane system. This achievement is a step towards the realization of the DGT, which will be the largest future project in the Port of Duisburg.
Markus Bangen, CEO of Duisburger Hafen AG, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "This is a very special moment. The currently largest future project in the Port of Duisburg is now also growing upwards, visible from afar."
The DGT project has been swiftly evolving, with Lars Nennhaus, Executive Board Member for Engineering and Operations, remarking on the impressive progress of the construction site. "The construction site on the former coal island is changing from day to day. It is impressive to see how our new terminal is taking on more and more contours."
The first of two main girders, weighing an impressive 113 tonnes, now spans the six recently laid DGT tracks. A second girder is currently being added. These cranes, equipped with a state-of-the-art 'terminal operating system', will be able to move containers weighing up to 43 tonnes across the trimodal terminal.
The installation of this first crane system serves as a significant landmark in the development of the DGT, with plans for more cranes to follow. In the initial expansion phase, three cranes will be operational at the DGT, with two at port basin A and one at port basin B. When fully completed, the terminal will have six cranes in an area of 235,000 square meters, with the capacity to move up to one million containers per year.
