Further deliveries are expected to continue as the biorefinery ramps up production.

Innofreight has dispatched its first trainload of beechwood for UPM Biochemicals, marking the start of regular transport operations to the company's new biorefinery in Leuna, Saxony-Anhalt. The delivery took place in early August and was managed using Innofreight’s SmartGigaWood system.

The timber will supply UPM’s industrial facility, currently in its commissioning phase. The plant is designed to process hardwood into biochemicals for use in various sectors, including textiles, plastics, rubber, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. According to the company, the focus is on replacing fossil-based raw materials with renewable alternatives.

Leuna remains one of Germany’s key chemical industry locations. The site hosts over 100 companies and employs around 15,000 people. The UPM facility represents a rare investment of this scale in the German chemical sector, adding a new segment focused on bio-based production.

The logistics model deployed by Innofreight includes modular loading systems and aims to streamline timber handling from forest to industry.
