ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) is adjusting its intermodal network.

The TransFER Genk–Curtici service by Rail Cargo Group between Belgium and Romania is increasing its frequency to six round trips per week, while two other TransFER services will be withdrawn later this year.

Six weekly departures on Genk–Curtici line

RCG is expanding its TransFER Genk–Curtici connection to six weekly round trips. The route links the terminal in Genk, Belgium, with the Curtici hub in western Romania, serving intermodal traffic across Western and Southeastern Europe.

The operator highlights the use of fixed schedules and a stated transit time of 40 hours for the full round trip. The service accommodates a variety of load units including containers (20–45 ft), swap bodies (25 and 45 ft), craneable and non-craneable trailers, and dangerous goods compliant with RID regulations.

(Temporary) cancellation of TransFER Wolfurt–Rotterdam and Linz–Duisburg–Rotterdam

At the same time, RCG is planning to withdraw two intermodal connections, Austrian media OEVZ reports, based on a customer letter sent on 10 July 2025: the TransFER Wolfurt–Rotterdam will cease operations at the end of August 2025, followed by the TransFER Linz–Duisburg–Rotterdam, ending service at the end of September 2025.

The decision to discontinue both services follows is not driven by lack of interest, but due to continued restrictions on the railway infrastructure. Despite adjustments to the operational concepts, RCG reports that the services have not been economically viable due to lower-than-expected productivity and misalignment between costs and market rates.

The operator stated that should conditions change to allow more sustainable operation, both connections may be reconsidered. Other routes such as Wolfurt–Hamburg/Bremerhaven and Linz–Hamburg/Bremerhaven remain unaffected and will continue as scheduled.
