A new block train connection between Hamm and Duisburg is now operational, offering regular intermodal rail service aimed at reducing road traffic between the two hubs.

The initiative was implemented jointly by duisport logistics & port services gmbh (dlps), a subsidiary of Duisburger Hafen, and Maxi Terminal Hamm.

The service is currently running twice a week—Wednesdays and Fridays—with a third weekly departure possible on Mondays depending on demand. Train operations are handled by Captrain Deutschland. The route links the Maxi Terminal Hamm with two Duisburg-based intermodal nodes: the Duisburg Gateway Terminal (DGT) and the DUSS terminal.

According to information provided, the rail connection has the potential to remove up to 500 trucks per month from regional roads. This shift from road to rail is presented as a logistics solution targeting a reduction in truck movements, with potential implications for emissions and road congestion.

The service links the Hamm economic area, including further-reaching regions such as Bielefeld, with Duisburg’s intermodal logistics infrastructure. From there, customers can access maritime ports in Antwerp and Rotterdam, and connect further through Duisburg’s continental and intercontinental multimodal network.

Marketing for the new product is managed by dlps. The company oversees the service framework in coordination with Maxi Terminal Hamm, positioning the connection as part of the broader intermodal offer at Duisburg.

This new rail link continues to build on intermodal service development within North Rhine-Westphalia and strengthens rail-based cargo flows between inland and seaport terminals.
