Ukrainian Railways (UZ) has received a delivery of 200 new flatbed wagons as part of the ongoing RELINC project, aimed at restoring the nation's critical rail infrastructure. These mobile platforms, essential for transporting cargo containers, will enable to increase the freight capacity of the rail network, which has become crucial in meeting the economic demands of the country amidst ongoing challenges.

The RELINC project, supported by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and funded by the World Bank, focuses on restoring essential rail connections and improving freight capacity. Since December 2023, over $7 million worth of equipment has been delivered to Ukrainian Railways. This initiative is part of a broader $50 million effort to support Ukraine’s recovery, specifically targeting the rail sector which is vital for the transportation of goods.

The importance of rail transport has surged due to the disruption of other modes of transport. With air travel limited and sea routes facing numerous obstacles, the railways have become the backbone for cargo movement, ensuring that essential goods reach businesses and communities across Ukraine.

Between December 2023 and June 2024, Ukrainian Railways received a variety of construction equipment, including mobile cranes, excavators, wheel loaders, and dump trucks. These machines are critical for repairing damaged rail lines and infrastructure, ensuring continuity in cargo shipments. By July 2024, additional equipment worth $1.5 million, including tractors, bulldozers, and cement mixers, is expected to be delivered.

The new flatbed wagons, valued at $15 million, are designed to transport standardized shipping containers, help with the efficiency and capacity of Ukraine’s rail transport system. This influx of equipment and rolling stock is part of an ongoing effort to support the country’s economic stability through improved logistics infrastructure.

The RELINC project is scheduled to conclude at the end of August 2024, with ongoing support from UNOPS and the World Bank aimed at ensuring the resilience and functionality of Ukraine’s rail network.
