Logistik Service GmbH (LogServ), voestalpine, TransANT, and DB Cargo have unveiled a new prototype wagon designed for the efficient transport of scrap metal.

The prototypes represent a key component in the logistics plan for voestalpine’s Linz site. The need for reliable and robust transportation of scrap is crucial as voestalpine shifts towards using electric arc furnaces, which rely heavily on scrap metal. These furnaces, central to producing green steel, require a consistent and efficient supply of raw materials. The new wagons, tailored specifically for this purpose, are built to handle the demands of scrap transport and promise improved operational reliability.

Innovative Wagon Design

The newly introduced scrap wagons are based on standard TransANT platform wagons but are optimized for scrap transport through a specialized design. These wagons are significantly more durable than those used for lighter bulk goods and are shorter, allowing for a 30% increase in load capacity over traditional models. This design results from a close partnership between TransANT, LogServ, and DB Cargo, incorporating voestalpine's high-strength alform® steels in both the wagon structure and the container, which were assembled at LogServ's experienced wagon workshops.

Supporting Sustainable Steel Production

This initiative is aligned with voestalpine’s greentec steel plan, aimed at reducing CO2 emissions in steel production. The focus on efficient scrap logistics and robust transport solutions is part of voestalpine's broader commitment to sustainability. With the new wagons, voestalpine can maintain a steady supply of scrap to its electric arc furnaces, ensuring the reliability needed for continuous production while meeting environmental targets.

Expanding Logistics Capabilities

The prototypes will first undergo rigorous internal testing within voestalpine's operations before being deployed across other routes in Austria and, eventually, into Germany by late 2024. This phased rollout is expected to validate the wagons' performance in various operational conditions and expand their use across Europe.

LogServ, a subsidiary of the voestalpine Steel Division founded in 2001, is a full-service provider specializing in industrial logistics. It operates Austria's largest private railway and manages a significant logistics hub at the voestalpine site in Linz, including a well-equipped Danube port. CargoServ, a LogServ subsidiary, offers tailored rail freight solutions for full train loads across public rail networks.

DB Cargo's Role in Sustainable Logistics

DB Cargo, a long-term partner of voestalpine and LogServ, plays a critical role in this innovative scrap logistics project. The company's involvement highlights its commitment to supporting sustainable transport solutions within the steel industry. The introduction of these new wagons is a continuation of DB Cargo's efforts to enhance the efficiency and reliability of scrap transport, contributing to the overarching goal of green steel production.
