Mercitalia Logistics, a leading entity within the FS Group's Logistics Hub, has teamed up with Marcegaglia Carbon Steel, an important part of the Mantua-based steel group Marcegaglia. The collaboration is aimed at the design and construction of new terminals and sidings, as well as the management of a new fleet of wagons tailored to the group's extensive transport needs. This partnership is an important step towards implementing new logistics solutions for the rail transport of steel products to and from Marcegaglia's plants.
This infrastructure development will increase the use of rail transport and significantly reduce truck traffic on Mantua's roads. This shift is in line with two objectives: to promote environmental sustainability by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants typically emitted by road vehicles; and to improve road safety by reducing truck traffic, thus ensuring safer transport conditions for both freight and passenger traffic. The project involves the construction of a new rail link of approximately 11 km between Castellucchio railway station and the Marcegaglia plant in Gazoldo degli Ippoliti, followed by a new rail terminal to serve the industrial areas of Gazoldo degli Ippoliti and Rodigo.
“The new mode of transport will complement the solutions we already use today for flows in the area and is necessary for the growth prospects, first and foremost, of the Gazoldo degli Ippoliti plant. It is also a step toward greater environmental sustainability, an issue to which we have always been very attentive” said Antonio and Emma Marcegaglia, at the helm of the Group of the same name.
