Announced on February 21, 2024, in Rio de Janeiro and Pittsburgh, the agreement on 30 new Wabtec locomotives is a part of MRS's strategic initiative for fleet renewal, amounting to an investment of approximately EUR 93.6 million. The first batch of these advanced locomotives is expected to be delivered within the year.
This action is aligned with MRS’s efforts to meet its regulatory commitments with the Brazilian Federal Government, aiming at boosting the efficiency of intermodal transportation and fostering the growth of the railway industry in Brazil. The partnership between MRS and Wabtec, extending nearly three decades, is further strengthened by this contract, reflecting a shared vision for a greener future in rail transportation.
The ES44ACi locomotives, introduced by Wabtec in 2022, represent a leap towards greener and more efficient rail transport technologies. With a 4,500 horsepower output from a 12-cylinder Evolution Series diesel engine, these locomotives have higher energy efficiency and reduced emissions. The advanced technology incorporated in the ES44ACi, including a turbocharged electronic four-stroke internal combustion engine and a double intake air cooling system, ensures lower CO2 emissions and reduced operating costs over the locomotive's lifespan.
MRS operates a 1,643 km railway network across the economically vital states of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. This network is connecting regions producing key commodities and industrial goods with major ports in the southeast, representing a significant portion of Brazil's export operations.
