An important step in improving Italy's logistics infrastructure has been taken with the announcement of a new freight train service between Bari and Verona. This service, which started on 15 January, is the result of a cooperation agreement between Terminali Italia (a company of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and part of the FS Group's Infrastructure Pole), GTS Rail and Consorzio ZAI, the company that manages the Verona Interport.
This development aims to make Verona's Quadrante Europa interport a more central part of the country's logistics structure, particularly regarding connections with European corridors. The new service offers three train connections per week and focuses on the transport of a variety of goods, including food, building materials, and steel. The service is expected to significantly reduce road traffic by taking over 9,000 lorries off the roads of the Adriatic ridge. This reduction is expected to have a significant positive impact on traffic decongestion and transport sustainability.
"Verona is the largest hub in Italy: we connect the country to Germany, Austria, Scandinavia, and the Benelux with 260 trains a week, guaranteeing fundamental support for Made in Italy," said Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics, the leader of the FS Group's Logistics Hub.
