Two infrastructure divisions of DB, one taking care of the railway network (DB Netz) and the other responsible for stations and services (DB Station&Service) will merge from 1.1.2024 into a single DB company.

Deutsche Bahn Supervisory Approved the merger of DB Netz and DB Stations&Service into DB InfraGO that will serve the “common good” in the future. DB is undergoing the most complex investment program for the rail network and the stations since the rail reform 1994. The merger was necessary to create the best possible synergies between the routes and stations to work the entire rail infrastructure system efficiently.

DB states that The management of the railway infrastructure should be efficient, network-related and user-oriented. The company aims to promote cross-border rail transport, innovations, and climate protection, mainly through modal passenger and freight transport shifts.

DB InfraGO has allocated additional funding of 40 billion euros to the modernisation program for the rail network and its stations. In addition, it has initiated a reform of the Federal Railway Expansion Act that should enable better funding opportunities for the future.

Although the creation of one rail infrastructure company is seen by many as a strongly demanded spin-off from the DB in a potential step in the future, there are even voices in Germany opposing this merger. One of them is the Bahn für Alle alliance, which sees the separation of track and trains as negative and protested against the split in the streets of Berlin on 27 September 2023, claiming that the entire Deutsche Bahn AG should be a non-profit organisation.
